Past Events

Below are a range of different visitors and activities that DIS has seen over the years. We enjoy hosting a range of experts to help give our students great experiences.

Black Ferns Visit

Our school was lucky enough to receive a surprise visit from two Black Fern players, Aldora Itunu and an ex-local Aleisha Nelson, who came sporting the Women's Rugby 7's World Cup. The Students were very excited and asked some great questions.  Then they all took advantage of some photo opportunities.

Japanese Students Visit

Our school was fortunate enough to have a visit from Japanese students who were attending Dargaville High School. They shared aspects of their culture with us through dance, story telling and demonstrating Oragami and the fine art of Calligraphy.

Olympic Ambassador Day

Rebecca Brothers represented NZ in Swimming at the Athens Olympic Games in 2004, Oceania Championships in 2002 and 2004, and the Australian Age Groups in 2001 and 2002.

Rebecca was made a New Zealand Olympic Ambassador at the end of 2016, and visits schools to help inspire young New Zealanders to lead active and ambitious lives.

She spoke to our students about Respect,  Friendship and Excellence.  She also spoke about overcoming challenges, goal setting and how to break them down into achievable steps.  All our students were completely engaged by her message.

NZ Music Musician Mentoring Programme

Our school Rock band and Kapa Haka roopu had the pleasure of working the Laughton Kora form NZ super group Kora, via the NZ Musician Mentoring Programme sponsored by the NZ Music Commission. This was an outstanding opportunity for our students to be mentored by a leader of the NZ Music Industry.

Experiencing Marine Reserves

In 2018 Dargaville Intermediate School participated in EMR (Experiencing Marine Reserves).

During this unit they study the environmental impact pollution is having on our coast lines and marine life.  They also get an opportunity to observe the differences between an area that has been protected and those that are not.

At the end of this unit the whole school travel to Goat Island Marine Reserve and snorkle, observing the vast variety of fish and marine life.
